Mark Bellhorn's 2-run home in the 8th clinched it last night. So who's the next Red Sox hero going to be?
We've already seen a bunch of players with clutch moves that helped the Sox win 4 in a row against the Yankees -- starting with David Ortiz, the MVP of the series. But he sure didn't do it alone. Mark Bellhorn had some heroics, as did Johnny Damon, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, Mike Timlin, Derek Lowe. At various times during the series, everyone contributed: Kevin Millar, Jason Varitek, Bill Mueller, Tim Wakefield, Dave Roberts, Pedro Martinez, Keith Foulke and others.
Someone will step up to the task -- and it may be someone that hasn't done it yet. That's what a well-balanced team of good players does -- they share the glory. Ever since the Sox got rid of Nomar Garciaparra (a star player who seemed to be poisoning the locker room), the Sox have been winning.
What does it take for teams to understand that winning doesn't require superstars? It's all about good players playing as a team. Don't believe me? Just take a look at the New England Patriots.
Superstars who are selfish prima donnas add little to a team when it comes time to winning a championship -- just ask some of the Lakers fans.
What happens when a bunch of good players have a superstar with his head screwed on right? Well, in that case, the sky's the limit. Take a look at the Celtics when Larry Bird was playing. He was the only true superstar on the team -- but he made sure that they all played as a team. He improved the players around him. As a result, the Celts won their share of championships. Jordan and Johnson probably fall into the same category.
Anyway, who will the hero be for the Red Sox in this series against the Cardinals? Dunno. But that makes it all the more fun to watch ....
