CAUTION GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION
Anyone going to YouTube.com can now access the execution of Saddam Hussein — with much more graphic details than is shown on U.S. television. The leaked cell phone video (which I won’t link to) shows Hussein being derided in his final moments, with witnesses shouting “Go to hell” before he drops through the gallows floor. He’s then seen hanging from the rope and later wrapped in a sheet — obviously dead.
This leaked cell phone video was broadcast on Al-Jazeera television and Iraq’s Sunnis have been protesting in the streets ever since it was shown.
Despite the gruesome video, it pales in comparison to the beheadings of innocent Americans that were shown early in the Iraq war. And while those were going on, I certainly didn’t see Iraq people protesting over the brutality.
Now the Washington Post reports that the person who apparently recorded the execution on his cell phone has been arrested.
The bottom lines is that Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator who murdered thousands of Iraqi people — even members of his own family. Executing him may not do much to shorten the war — but I find it difficult to comprehend the outrage over his execution. I’ve read newspaper editorials and letters to the editor criticizing his execution.
If Hitler was alive and executed today, I’m sure there would be protesters too.
