This is a movie made for young men. It’s testosterone-filled Spartans make a brave stand against the thousands upon thousands of Persian forces at Thermopylac in 480 B.C.
The great thing about the movie is that the Spartans are men’s men. They fight to kill and will keep fighting against the most lopsided odds until their death. Each one of them is a fighting machine that simply will not quit while they are still able to swing a sword or stab a lance.
The awful thing about the movie is that the Spartans are men’s men — and nothing else. We all know going into the movie that the Spartans are going to eventually lose. The trick is seeing how many of the despicable Persians they can take with them before they go.
So from beginning to end there is nothing but bad-ass Spartans whipping up on tough Persians (though never quite tough enough … until the end of course).
This is a movie that those who play first person shooter video games will love. I’m sure that those in the military think that it’s great.
It has wonderfully realistic special effects. Decapitations, amputations, and mutilations are rendered in splendid detail. The Spartans are all built like the Governor of California and the Spartan women are not only beautiful — but just as tough as their men.
It’s more than a movie — it’s an adventure.
