The Washington Post noted today that the latest poll has 70% of folks not approving of how President Bush is handling the economy.
What is surprising for me isn’t that so many folks think that Bush is doing a poor job with the economy — it’s that 59% of Republicans approve of the way he’s managing the economy. With all the mess going on with bank foreclosures, bankruptcies, government bail outs, record gas prices and food prices, just how can so many people think that Bush is doing a good job?
Clearly, politics colors reality.
There are plenty of folks who will support Bush no matter what he does — period. If he said that we need to send another 100,000 troops to Iraq, they’d nod their heads. If he said that we’re going to win the war in the next three months, they’d agree. If he said that the economy was turning around and to expect lower food and gas prices this summer, they’d applaud him.
Why? Because they’re Republicans and it’s more important to their self-image to support the President and the party than to admit that this Republican President has left us far worse off than before he came into office. So they’ll deny everything around them that conflicts with their political beliefs.
Sounds a lot like the President himself, doesn’t it?
