Senator McCain suspended his campaign yesterday to focus all his efforts on bringing together leaders in Congress to effectively deal with the current financial crisis.
How can he help?
He acknowledges that finances aren’t his strong point. Just a week ago, on September 15, McCain declared, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.”
This was after the collapse of of Lehman Brothers and the bargain-basement purchase of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America, and the bailout of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and Bear Stearns.
Duh.
No one in Washington believes his presence is necessary in order to come up with a comprehensive plan to stabilize the markets. So why suspend his campaign and ask that the debate be delayed?
Politics.
Now that folks are focusing on the economy, the polls show that McCain is losing ground to Obama. And why not? McCain has spent his entire career in the Senate promoting deregulation of financial institutions. His claims now that he’s a “reformer” and ready to clean up Wall Street don’t square at all with his record.
No, McCain is suspending his campaign for only one reason. Politics, pure and simple.
Letterman thinks it doesn’t “smell right.”

It's only a matter of lipstick...
