In today’s Washington Post, another article adds to the recession woes of lawyers. The piece describes Geoff Willard, a former big firm partner, who tossed aside his previous job and joined a start-up “virtual” law firm.
For him, it’s working. And for the thousands and thousands of lawyers that have been fired over the last few months, it’s an option that some of them may think about doing. Either that, or changing professions entirely.
I’ve been practicing nearly 30 years, and I’ve never seen it this slow. Sure, there are fields where attorneys are busy: bankruptcy, collections, foreclosure, etc.
And I’m sure that out placement services that cater to unemployed lawyers are doing well.
But for the solo with a general practice, it’s rough sledding. And I don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel….
