I knew it. Playing against the Houston Texans with a 14–point lead going into the 4th quarter just wasn’t enough for the Patriots. I was worried because the Pats had done nothing all year but blow 4th quarter leads in away games.
So I wasn’t feeling good with the New England Patriots being up 27–13 going into the last quarter of the game.
Never mind that Wes Welker had already been hurt in the first quarter — and just from looking at him on the sidelines after the injury it was clear that this was a season ending injury. (A guy as tough as Welker doesn’t curse into a towel and need to wipe his eyes just because he’s just bruised his knee.)
The Patriots finish the year with a poor 10–6 record and yesterday blew a 14-point lead by surrendering 21 points in the fourth quarter to the Texans. The Pats defense can’t suck enough at the end of the game. Their linebackers — and especially their corners and safety — just aren’t getting it done. When big plays are needed, they’re playing it safe instead of being aggressive.
I wasn’t surprised — after all, the Pats are 1–6 in away games this season. That, of course, leaves fans (and probably the players too if truth be known) with zero confidence in the post season. Sure, the Pats might beat the Ravens Sunday at home — but after that? Don’t hold your breath Pats fans — especially with Welker out.
Can the Patriots progress to the Super Bowl in the post season without Welker? Say yes and I’ve got a bridge you might be interested in buying.
