The Wearable Friend Finder

Students at the University of Maine have developed technology that allows those looking for love to do so with an wearable electronic device called a “Friend Finder.”

The gadget is programed with information about the wearer and is designed to help people make a personal connection when another user with comparable interests is within 30 feet.  When that happens, the device lights up so you can spot your nearby match.

Here is a YouTube clip showing how it works:

The device has received lots of publicity (like today’s Wall Street Journal) and has the potential to take the computer-dating industry by storm.

Someday, instead of logging onto a computer to see if you have any personality matches to contact for a date, you’ll just need to walk out your front door and look for someone flashing near you!

    Forced Incrimination By Password

The Washington Post has an interesting article today about a Vermont man having suspected child pornography on his computer.  The government wants the court to order the man to type his password into the computer to unlock files they suspect contain porn.

The man claims that doing so would constitute self-incrimination.  The judge has ruled that he doesn’t have to give his password.

"If [he] does know the password, he would be faced with the forbidden trilemma: incriminate himself, lie under oath, or find himself in contempt of court," the judge said.  The government has appealed.

Does the Fifth Amendment prevent this type of intrusion?  What do you think?

    Ficlets for creative writers

John Scalzi, a talented writer who writes a blog called Whatever, has a new gig called ficlets.  He explains it here.

What are ficlets?  As described on the site:

A ficlet is a short story that enables you to collaborate with the world.

Once you’ve written and shared your ficlet, any other user can pick up the narrative thread by adding a prequel or sequel. In this manner, you may know where the story begins, but you’ll never guess where (or even if!) it ends.

It’s a lot of fun.  Go ahead.  Give it a whirl.

Lots of others are hyping it.

And yes, there is a ficlets blog.
