Amazon Video On Demand With Roku Digital Video Player

Amazon is now selling the Roku Digital Video Player which will allow users to watch over 40,000 movies and TV shows with Amazon’s Video on Damand service. 

So for $99, you can watch videos on the day that they are released on DVD.  I just checked on Amazon the the 24–hour rental for Australia, for example, was $3.99.

The Roku player works with any TV and is compatible with the Netflix “Watch Instantly” service.  My understanding is that Netflix now offers over 12,000 movies and TV shows available for instant viewing.

I haven’t gotten a Roku Digital Video Player yet, but I’m thinking about it.  For those of you who have one, what is your experience with it?

 

Digital TV Time Should NOT Have Been Extended

I wrote a week ago that I was pleased that the switch to digital tv was not postponed by Congress.

Oops. 

I spoke too soon.

Now they have decided to extend the digital conversion deadline from February 17^th to June 12th.

Why?  Because despite spending about $1 billion in public service ads and handing out millions of free coupons for converter boxes, over 6 million households aren’t ready for the switch.

Do you really think all these folks will be ready in 4 months?  Yeah, me neither.

Know what I say to those folks who haven’t switched despite the ad nauseam number of ads that have been running for well over a year?

Tough luck.

I hope all the tv stations that are ready to convert on February 17^th do it anyway.  For those that aren’t ready — do something else besides watch tv.  Hey, maybe you could even read a book!

The Super Bowl XLIII Was Super

Yeah, it was a great game.  Having the Cardinals come back from 13 down and score with 3 minutes left and take the lead was exciting enough — but to then have Pittsburg score with just 35 seconds left was a thriller.  It was a great 27–23 win for the Steelers and Arizona played their hearts out.

Course iif you’re a dedicated New England Patriots fan, like I am, it was hard to get all that worked up about the game.  Truthfully, I just didn’t care that much who won.

But football is like sex: sometimes it’s better than other times, but it’s almost always pretty darned good.

Good News: No Delay For Switch To Digital TV

I’m glad that there is no switch to digital tv.  We’ve been hearing about the switch for over a year.  If folks aren’t prepared by now: tough luck.

If folks can’t get their $40 coupons — sorry.  You shouldn’t have waited until the last minute.  Besides, why should everyone be given a free $40 coupon anyway?  Why should the government be paying to help folks with their tv conversion?

Count me happy that there is no delay.

No Peyton, No Eli? No Problem.

You’ll have to look elsewhere for someone upset that the Colts and the Giants have been eliminated in the NFL.  As a New England Patriots fan, a Superbowl with no Mannings is a lovely sight indeed.

Now it’s just a matter of rooting for the team you dislike the least….

 

Patriots Play Jets Thursday Night But Who'll See It?

The Pats-Jets game tomorrow night will only be shown in the Boston Metro area and in Manchester N.H.  Other than that, the game will be on the NFL Network which where I live (Portland, Maine), is apparently available on the DirectTV Group and Dish Network. 

None of the regular television stations will carry it.  In addition, Time Warner Cable — the major cable provider here in Maine, won’t show it.

So despite the fact that they are the “New England” Patriots, and I live in Maine (which is certainly part of “New England”) — there will be no watching the game for me.

Bummer.

Palin Adds McCain to CBS Interview

After two disastrous interviews on CBS News, McCain was taking no chances by letting Sarah Palin talk one-on-one again with Katie Couric.  Instead, he held a joint interview so he could defend his beleaguered running mate.

So apparently that’s what it has come to now:  Palin can’t be trusted to do her own interviews.

Celtics Destroy the Lakers 131 - 92

So much for Kobe Bryant — the famed Lakers MVP — carrying his team to the championship.  So much for the glitzy offense of L.A.  So much for all the hype from the west coast.

Game 6 came down to what often wins championships: defense.

The Celtics allowed Bryant only 22 points, stole loose balls all over the floor and made their shots — lots of them.  This blow out of the Lakers leaves no doubt about who is the best basketball team.

Believe it.

Celtics championship number 17.  Get ready to hang another one up.
