Howard Ulman, a sport writer for the Associated Press, apparently doesn’t know his ass from his elbow. In an article written today, he claims that Belichick — after devising the strategy that no one else in the NFL could come up with to stop Peyton Manning — must lead the Patriots to a victory over the Steelers or else Belichick’s reputation will be shot.
This is what Ulman writes:
"Another loss to the Steelers and Bill Belichick could go from the mastermind who baffled Peyton Manning to the bungler who still can’t beat Ben Roethlisberger."
Give me a break!
Belichick has led the Pats in their victories of two Super Bowls in the last three years. This is his second consecutive 14-2 season. He devised a game plan against the Colts that had Peyton Manning shaking his head and wondering what hit him — with Manning not throwing a touchdown for the first time in 16 games.
And Ulman thinks Belichick’s reputation will be tarnished if the Pats don’t win against the Steelers with a record of 16-1? Clearly, Ulman isn’t paying attention to all that Belichick has done over the last 3 years. Sure, I want the Pats to win on Sunday (they’re favored by 3 points right now — even though the Steelers are at home, beat the Pats during the regular season and have a better record). But if they don’t win, I won’t blame Belichick or think any less of his skill as a coach.
Anyone who would just doesn’t know sports — certainly not football. After all, the Steelers have an impressive number of wins this year — is every coach of a team that lost to them also a "bungler" too?
Ulman may want to cover sports where his unique insights might be better utilized — say cricket or rugby.
