I’ve been a life long Democrat and I can’t for the life of me understand this year’s Presidential election.
It appears now that John McCain will be the Republican candidate (though Romney could still pull it out).
On the Democratic side, who knows whether it will be Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Either way, why have the Democrats put forth such controversial candidates?
Many people today feel that President Bush has been a disaster: his approval rating is in the low 30’s, the war in Iraq is a mess, few of his big initiatives have passed, the economy is in the toilet … I could go on and on. I believe that the country is looking for a change in leadership and the last election showed that they want some Democrats as leaders.
From my point of view, if the Democrats put forth a strong candidate, considering all the dissatisfaction with the current administration, the election should be a cakewalk.
Instead, we will have the choice between the first woman or the first African American. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for progress and having the best candidate run for office — regardless of that person’s race or gender. But haven’t the Democrats shot themselves in the foot by having such a controversial candidate (whichever one eventually wins)?
Instead of this election for the Democrats being simply “look how awful the current situation under the Republicans is — vote for me”, it now will focus on THE FIRST — the first woman or the first black person.
I believe there are a large number of voters who won’t vote for the Democratic candidate BECAUSE she is a woman or BECAUSE he is an African American. I could be wrong, bit if I’m not, are the Democrats handing the election to the Republicans?
