A long time ago, I wrote a book for Maine residents on how to pay less in property taxes. It had the catchy title “How To Stop Paying High Property Taxes in Maine — A Step-By-Step Guide To Reducing Your Tax Bills.”
I’m just wondering — because of the housing glut and substantially reduced prices on homes — are you paying too much in property taxes? Questions to ask are:
1) how much are you currently paying in property taxes;
2) when was your property last valued where you live;
3) what has your city or town assessed to be the value of your home;
4) have recent reductions in property values where you live made your property worth less than your tax assessment?
It may be that if your city or town reassessed the value of your property shortly before the recent reductions of real estate values, you may have a claim to pay lower property taxes. If so, perhaps you should challenge your tax bill.
