I previously reviewed this author’s book, NO MERCY, and liked it quite a bit. I was looking forward to reading about the continued adventures of Mercy Gunderson, a hard-drinking, former black ops army sniper who isn’t adjusting well to her return to civilian life on her family’s ranch in
Not finding many employers seeking her skill-set as a former military sharp shooter, Mercy accepts a temporary job as a bartender at Clementine’s, the local drinking spot. She soon learns of a development threat by Titan Oil, a Canadian company that wants to put an underground pipeline directly through her property and that of half the County. A former army buddy, Jason “J-Hawk” Hawley, tries to convince Mercy and the other local ranchers to accept the project, with limited success. Tensions are high with folks on both sides of the issue, when Jason turns up shot and knifed to death in the parking lot outside Clementine’s.
Mercy isn’t happy when Sheriff Dawson, her lover, seems to be shirking his investigation of the murder. She decides to do her own investigation and is so upset with the Sheriff that she is talked into running against him in the upcoming election. Mercy soon uncovers some tarnish to the image she has of her former military buddy. Before you know it, others are involved in the investigation: Jason’s old army flame Anna, and the FBI. As the evidence grows, it leads to a number of suspects.
